  • One of the best known symbols that can be encountered in everyday life is the International Symbol of Access (ISA), also known as Wheelchair symbol. This symbol, over the last few years, has undergone several revisions attempts by multiple proponents: one of the most significant among them is that made by Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI), the company in charge of managing the infrastructure of rail transport in Italy, which also deals with the management of most of the Italian railway stations. RFI indeed uses a symbol that brings together the ISA and other icons to indicate the meeting points; those are the spaces set up for the reception and accompaniment service for people with disabilities.

The key purpose of this research is to understand why RFI chose to create a new symbol and to substitute the ISA with it, using the symbolist theory of artifacts as a guide. We believe that this substitution has lot to say in terms of organizational inclusion and representation of people with disabilities.

Symbols incorporate visions and practices, becoming themselves elements of inclusion or exclusion, and they (have to) change in accordance to the transformation of society and organisations. Also, since mobility is a key element for every individual, a deeper understanding of this element can give us a better comprehension of how transport systems can contribute to achieve a real organizational inclusion.
